Glen Canyon Dam construction began in 1956 and was completed in 1964. It is similar to Hoover Dam in size and structure. Glen Canyon Dam was designed to be the "key" dam in the upper Colorado River storage project to utilize and control the large and erratic flows of the Colorado River and provide dependable water resources to several southwest states. Dammin the Colorado in Glen Canyon created dramati Lake Powell. The Lake's 2000 mile shoreline provides a wonderland of fishing, boatin, camping and swimming activities in a magnificent desert backdrop.
